Mangaluru police launch major drive against drug menace

The police arrested a student of a reputed college with 300 gm of ganja. It is said that drugs are being pumped into the city from Mumbai.

Mangaluru: Taking the drug menace seriously, the Mangaluru police have started a major drive by arresting drug peddlers and tracking down the mafia that runs the cartel. Also, the police have taken measures to ensure that the youth, especially college and school-going children, do not fall prey to the menace.

On Sunday, the police arrested a student of a reputed college with 300 gm of ganja, which he allegedly supplied to other students.

In another case, after a tipoff from the public to the police commissioner, Garuda Lodge at Surathkal was raided on Sunday. The police team found seven people in two rooms with drugs. Two cases were registered and 500 gm of ganja was seized.

Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil said that a letter will be written to the local municipal corporation to suspend the hotel’s licence.

On Saturday, the police arrested seven people and seized 10 gm of MDM (Ecstasy drug) and 500 gm of ganja from them.

It is said that drugs are being pumped into the city from Mumbai. The bigger players supply it to some college students or drug peddlers, who then distribute it to others. The kingpin and major suppliers are said to be operating from outside the state, and the police are tracking their activities too.

While conducting raids and arresting drug peddlers, the police are also taking steps to ensure that the youth do not consume drugs.

The police recently held a meeting with paying guest accommodation and hostel managers to discuss the issue. “In a day or two, we will give them detailed guidelines on what they should do," Mr Sandeep Patil told Deccan Chronicle.
