Kochi: Jacobite church calls for talks

Decrying the attempts by the orthodox faction to deny burial rights as inhuman, Dr. Abraham said everyone deserves right for dignified burial.

Kochi: The Jacobite Syrian Church, involved in a long standing dispute with the rival Orthodox faction, has called for solving the dispute through negotiations. Speaking to reporters on Monday Dr. Kuriakose Theophilos , Dr. Abraham Severios and other metropolitans of Jacobite Church have urged the Orthodox section to cooperate with the efforts made by the state government, Coptic Church heads, heads of other churches, Patriarch and others to find a solution to the issue.

Stating that the Orthodox Church faction is spreading false news about the Supreme Court verdict Dr Kuriakose said the order by the bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra on July 2, 2019 on a special leave petition filed by the Orthodox faction was not against negotiated settlement of the issue. Also none of the demands raised by the Orthodox faction in the SLP has been granted by the Supreme Court, he added.

The original order of the Supreme Court made in 2017 July has clearly stated that the two factions should discuss to solve the issues and if needed even amend the 1934 constitution of Malankara Church. The High Court order in connection with the Varikkoly and Kattachira churches was based on the verdict of the apex court.

Decrying the attempts by the orthodox faction to deny burial rights as inhuman, Dr. Abraham said everyone deserves right for dignified burial. The Orthodox faction is trying to negate the rights under the cover of the Supreme Court verdict, he said.
