Chennai: Security has been stepped up on Greenways Road in the city where Justice M. Sundar of the Madras high court, following an anonymous letter threatening to murder him and his family.
Justice Sundar had pronounced a differing verdict setting aside the Tamil Nadu assembly Speaker’s order regarding the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs (TTV Dhinakaran faction).
According to sources, the letter was received on Saturday and the details of the same had been elucidated to Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and the CJ asked city police commissioner A.K. Viswanathan to make sure that Justice Sundar and his family were provided with additional guards. “All judges are already being provided with security. Following the threat, security has been increased at Justice Sundar’s residence,” a source said.
While Chief Justice Indira Banerjee had ruled that in her view, the disqualification under the anti-defection law was in no way unreasonable, perverse or irrational, Justice Sundar ruled that the Speaker’s order was liable to be struck down on the grounds of perversity, mala fide and non-compliance with the principles of natural justice.
Following the split verdict, the matter was referred to a third judge M. Sathyanarayanan.
