Parents protest fee hike in Vasavi Engineering College

The college hiked the fee on the basis of an interim order by the HC for the academic year 2018-19.

Hyderabad: Parents protested against a fee hike at the Vasavi Engineering College, stating that the arbitrary increase was against court orders. The newly formed parents association has sent a notice stating that they will not pay the difference in fee despite the college persistently asking them to pay up.

The college hiked the fee on the basis of an interim order issued by the High Court for the academic year 2018-19. The order stated that the college must provide a bank guarantee of Rs 20,000 per student and can collect Rs 1 lakh as the fee.

However the college was charging nearly Rs 1.6 lakh as against the Rs 97,000 earlier, parents alleged. Many parents stated that their wards took admission in Vasavi Engineering College because the fee structure was lower as opposed to other colleges. “It is atrocious that the court’s orders are disobeyed,” a parent said.

Earlier this year, a few students were denied permission to write their exams because of non-payment of fee. However parents and students staged a protest following which the college reconsidered their stand and allowed all students to appear for the exam. Last month, students of the Sreenidhi College of Engineering and Technology and their parents had similarly protested an increase in fee. The issue later attracted the attention of minister K.T. Rama Rao.
