Adilabad: Stranded by swollen stream, woman gives birth in auto

The two staffers had gone to the village to accompany Ms Lalita to the PHC after she went into labour.

ADILABAD: A pregnant woman gave birth to a baby in an autorickshaw, with the help of health staff who were accompanying her, when the vehicle was stranded at a stream that was overflowing following heavy rain in the area.

Officials said Soyam Lalita of Rupapur in Gadiguda mandal, about 50 km from Adilabad, could not reach the primary health care centre (PHC) that was about 2 km away, in time.

According to sources, two staffers from the PHC, lab technician Jana Bai and auxiliarry nurse midwife (ANM) Kudimetha Tulasi Bai, who were accompanying Ms Lalita, performed the delivery on the spot.

The two staffers had gone to the village to accompany Ms Lalita to the PHC after she went into labour. After the delivery, the staff along with locals waited for the water to subside and then helped shift the mother and the newborn to an ambulance on the other side of the stream which took them to the PHC.
