HYDERABAD: Final year engineering graduates selected during campus recruitments are heaving a huge sigh of relief after IT companies began giving them joining dates. Doubts were cast whether freshers would get ‘joining dates on time or whether they would get delayed in view of mass retrenchment of techies in the IT sector this year. Human resource desks at IT companies have been asking candidates to turn up on a particular date and location with the required documents and for medical tests in the case of some companies, according to Prof. Umamaheshwar Rao, chief placements officer, Osmania College of Engineering.
He said that almost 90 students, who just passed out of BE were given joining dates and offers by Accenture and Infosys and the rest of the selected students are expected to join in batches in July and August. IT firms give ‘offer letters’ to selected techies from top colleges in three to four batches spread over two to three months, the professor added. The same situation is seen in other colleges like JNTU engineering college and the oldest private college in the state, CBIT.
Mr Suresh Kumar, chief placements officer, said that top IT firms like TCS, Accenture, Cyient have already given joining dates to freshers selected in campus placements. Mr K. Sai Kiran, a fresher, said he was tense with developments in IT sector over the last two months and was worried whether companies would defer joining dates. However, nothing of that sort is being seen at least in top colleges, he said.Explaining the industry perspective, Mr S. Jayaram, vice-president of SP Software Consulting, Madhapur, felt that urgency on the part of IT firms can be understood, since most of the companies have to fill vacancies that arose due to performance appraisals that take place every year.
“Due to various reasons, IT companies are unable to accommodate experienced techies, who failed to re-skill themselves,” he said. It should be compensated and hence freshers are rushed in so that they can be trained and inducted in ongoing or new projects,” he said
