Study speedbreakers for norm compliance: Madras High Court
CHENNAI: In an attempt to prevent accidents, the Madras high court has directed the Chennai corporation commissioner to carry out a survey of speedbreakers in Chennai and to verify how many of them meet the requirements, within three months. A division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan gave the directive while disposing of a taken up PIL, which sought to direct the authorities to take appropriate action to re-lay speedbreakers near roads of all educational institutions and hospitals in the state to avoid accidents.
The Bench said the grievance was of speedbreakers laid near educational institutions and hospitals not being in conformity with the norms. In the counter affidavit by authorities, it was stated that speedbreakers were being laid with necessary precautions following specifications as per the Indian Roads Congress. “On paper, what is stated, there can be no quibble. However, if one drives even around Chennai, the ground reality may not be as reflected in the affidavit. We, thus, call upon the Chennai corporation commissioner to carry out a survey of the speedbreakers, as an example, in Chennai and to verify how many of them meet the requirements, within 3 months”, the Bench added and listed the matter for compliance on September 30.
