Rajya Sabha has lost its credibility: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

As more of you become digitally empowered citizens, a basic set of rights must be developed, says Chandrasekhar.

Bengaluru: “I believe the Rajya Sabha, as well conceived as it is, has now lost credibility. There is a problem of money in politics, causing distortion in democracy and ignoring the citizens,” said MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar in light of the recent incident of sale of Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka.

On net neutrality, he said, “As more of you become digitally empowered citizens, a basic set of rights must be developed. Net neutrality is one such consumer right and it is not allowing a telecom company to decide for you the experience of the internet. It is a fundamental issue for you and a fight worth fighting for.”

Mr Chandrasekhar, who is also a tech entrepreneur, addressed students of Mount Carmel College on “A look into your future-India’s future”, on Friday.
Talking about Bengaluru, he said the city is not growing according to a long-term plan. “Despite me breaking my head, nobody wants a plan. There is no administrative discretion that can be used. The reason is those with political power do not want a plan as it will cramp their style. The citizens must not complain about roads or traffic, but ask for a plan instead,” he said.

On the political class not acknowledging the services of the defence forces, he said, “Why are airports or railway stations in this country not named after bravehearts who have laid down their lives? Even in Parliament, we have nominated cricketers and film stars, who don’t turn up. But we have never sent a veteran.”

He reiterated technology is India’s future. A farmer with the help of technology can directly deal with the consumer and also have access to his social security package, he said.
