Chennai: Workshop on road safety standards

Consumer Association of India organised a one-day workshop on Friday.

Chennai: In an attempt to sensitise consumers about the vehicle safety standards, Consumer Association of India organised a one-day workshop on Friday. Representatives of various consumer associations had asked the consumers to be more informative about the safety standards. “The interest consumers show in knowing the mileage of the car is not seen, in case of safety measures. A coordinated effort from consumers, automobile manufacturers and government can be a change maker,” said T. Sadagopan, president, Tamil Nadu Progressive Consumer Centre.

Consumers are entitled to know pre-sales information about safety provisions in the vehicles,” added T. Sadagoppan, a participant. Stating that Tamil Nadu is ranked among the top three ‘fatal’ states in regard to road safety, consumer activists urged the government to usage of seatbelts mandatory. Abhijit Mandal, deputy director, Global Automotive Research Centre, said that the usage of seat belts should not be made optional.
