Centre may set up education tribunals for public grievances
Hyderabad: The Center is mulling to establish education tribunals in New Delhi as well as in states to deal with public grievances against the government as well as private institutions.
These bodies will be headed by retired High Court judges. The tribunals will have the power to follow summary procedures for expeditious disposal of cases. Asked about the proposal, retired High Court judge Justice B. Chandra Kumar said appointing tribunals would be of no use if they do not have enough teeth.
“The tribunals should be given powers to take stringent action against violators. If a private school is found to be collecting excess fee, the tribunal should be given authority to impose 100 times penalty so that it would act as a deterrent. In cases of serious violations, even the school’s permission has to be revisited without causing inconvenience to students,” he said.
School fee regulation JAC chairman Aravinda Jata backed the proposal of the Centre. She said a regulatory body would go a long way in keeping a check on excesses of private schools.
She said a few CBSE school managements were ignoring the circulars issued by the state government. “Their argument is that only the CBSE has jurisdiction over them and the state government cannot intervene in their functioning. We hope every school will be accountable to the tribunal once it is set up,” she said.
