DU might adopt the CUCET after board exam cancellation, officials report

DU will likely begin its annual admission procedure from mid-July, possibly conducting the CUCET for admission to UG courses

New Delhi: Reports state that the University of Delhi (DU) will likely begin its annual admission procedure from mid-July, possibly conducting the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) to admit students to its various UG programmes, after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) made the decision to cancel the Class 12 board exams.

Following the news of the cancellation of board examinations by CBSE, CISCE, and almost every State board due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the varsity officials have stated that the administration will hold a discussion to finalise the admission process to the university in regards to its Undergraduate Courses.

DU officials hope that whichever state boards have chosen to proceed with their Class 12 examinations, will release all results by mid-July, following which the admission process is anticipated to begin.

The varsity’s acting Vice-Chancellor, P.C. Joshi, has stated that they would be adjusting its admission process due to COVID-19 situation without compromising on merit as a criterion. On June 2, the acting-VC suggested the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) as a method for evaluation for the academic year 2021-22.

"If [CUCET] is held, we will take it as merit. If CUCET does not happen this year like the board exams, we will take the board exam evaluation. The various boards will definitely choose some mature method of evaluation. On the basis of those, we will prepare our merit list accordingly," Professor Joshi said.

The Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) is a common entrance test suggested by the Indian government for admission for 54 Central Universities for the academic year 2021-22. Though there is already a common entrance test for 13 newly established Central Universities across states, it is an exam conducted in an offline mode once a year. The new CUCET has been designed to be conducted in an online mode by the National Testing Agency (NTA), twice a year to allow an opportunity for improvement.

However, the Education Ministry is yet to release a decision on the conduction of the CUCET for the academic year 2021-22.
