Smart City prog throwing out locals: Thanjavur MLA

Their houses have been demolished for creating parks under smart city scheme.

Thanjavur: The DMK will lead an agitation if people displaced in Periya kottai (big moat) area for creating parks under the ‘smart city scheme’ of Thanjavur are not provided houses in the same place said T.K.G. Neelamegam, Thanjavur MLA (DMK) here on Saturday.

He met displaced people of Mela alankam area. Later, he told presspersons that these people are living in this area for the past 60 years. Their houses have been demolished for creating parks under smart city scheme. They have been provided with a place, 10 kms away from the town.

“But these people say that they cannot go ten-km from the town as they have to send their children to schools in town and as many of them eke out their livelihood by doing small trade and other business,” he said.

They should be provided houses in the same place, lest DMK will lead an agitation seeking justice to them, the MLA said.

He also alleged that there is large scale misappropriation of funds allotted for smart city schemes by corporation officials and ruling party members.

He alleged that a sum of Rs 10 crore has been allotted for desilting and renovating samanthan kulam, Ayyankulam and Sivangangai tank. But it is enough if `one crore is allotted for the purpose.
