Monsoon hits Kerala after a week’s delay
Thiruvananthapuram: After a week’s delay, the monsoon hit the Kerala coast on Saturday. The IMD has withdrawn the red alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in Thrissur on June 10 and in Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts on June 11.
However, the IMD has issued orange alerts for Ernakulam and Malappuram on June 10 and for Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram on June 11. Orange alerts have been issued for Ernakulam and Kozhikode on June 12. In districts where orange alerts have been issued, there are chances of rain between 115 mm and 204.5 mm.
Yellow alerts have been issued for Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Malappuram districts on Sunday; Kottayam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasargod on Monday;
Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on Tuesday; and Alappuzha, Kannur and Kasargod districts on Wednesday.
Isolated heavy rainfalls are expected in these districts. In view of the enhanced cloudiness, strengthening of westerly winds and persistent cyclonic circulation in the lower and mid-levels over Lakshadweep area and neighbourhood, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of South Arabian Sea, most parts of Lakshadweep area, some parts of Kerala and south Tamil Nadu, and remaining parts of Comorin– Maldives area, some more parts of southwest, southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal, the IMD statement said.
Southwest monsoon has been weak over the state. Rain occurred at most places in Lakshadweep and at a few places in Kerala. Peerumade (Idukki district) reported a heavy rainfall of 8 cm. The other chief amounts of rainfall reports in cm are: Kannur 5, Agathi and Minicoy (both in Lakshadweep), Thodupuzha (Idukki district) and Manjeri (Malappuram district) 2 each and Amini (Lakshadweep), Aryankavu (Kollam district), Kanjirappally (Kottayam district), Vadakara (Kozhikode district), Irikkur and Thalassery (both in Kannur district) 1 each.
