Bengaluru: Big bags to ease pourakarmikas’ burden

To make lives of pourakarmikas easy, the BBMP is now planning to procure one lakh jumbo bags.

Bengaluru: You might have seen pourakarmikas struggling to carry the garbage they collect to their destinations every day. With no proper bag allotted to them, they are often seen carrying garbage in discarded plastic mats, carpets, bedsheets, polythene bags.

Quite often papers, plastic covers and others light weight wastes get blown away due to wind or spill out while the worker is dragging it to a push cart or the auto tipper.

To make lives of pourakarmikas easy, the BBMP is now planning to procure one lakh jumbo bags. They can easily dump the garbage into these bags and take them to their destinations at ease without any spillage.

A top official of the BBMP's Solid Waste Management wing said that keeping all these factors in mind they have invited tender to supply one lakh jumbo bags and 2,000 push carts.

"At many places, pourakarmikas are struggling to carry the garbage. They sweep roads and foothpaths, but at present they do not have anything to carry the wastes collected. These jumbo bags will be handy for them, make their work easier and keep the city clean" the official added.

Regarding the controversy over ordering for one lakh bags, while there are only 18,000 pourakarmikas, he said "These bags can be used only for 20-30 days and then they will have to go for new bag," the official said.

Once the bags arrive, we will assess its effectiveness. Then we can think about ordering them again or looking for another solution, he added.
