'Sports Authority of Telangana' ignored champion
Hyderabad: Ms Bhagyasree, daughter of a Hyderabad-based doctor couple, is an international fencer and is ranked in the top 8 in the country. She has represented India in the senior category, participated in World Cups in China and Algeria, and won a bronze medal in the Thailand open championship.
According to her sports certificates, Ms Bhagyasree should have been ranked first in the priority list and have secured a medical seat under the sports quota. But the Sports Authority of Telangana State internal committee did not include her name in the list. Ms Bhagyasree, a resident of Yousufguda, secured the 45,000th rank nation-wide and 1,900 in the state. When she applied for admission into a medical college, her certificates were sent to the SATS for validation.
Her father, Dr Lakshmikanth, said, “Even without consulting us, the committee issued a priority list and didn't include her name. She should have been on the top of the list as she was among the youngest to reach this stage. We approached the court and secured an order in our favour but the sports quota seats were filled by then.”
Since Ms Bhagyasre had scored a top rank in the open category on grounds of merit, she was able to secure an admission.
