Telangana wants to do away with learner licence

The amendments will also enable the Transport department to provide many of its services online.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government plans to amend the Transport Act so that one will not need to obtain a learner licence before getting a permanent driver’s licence. The amendments will also enable the Transport department to provide many of its services online, thus increasing ease of doing business in the state. These amendments will, however, need approval from the Centre.

Learner’s Licence is not of much use to people but they have to visit the Transport office multiple times to obtain one. That’s why the government is examining how to do away with it, Principal Secretary of Transport and Roads & Buildings departments Sunil Sharma said. Telangana is obtaining information about the practice prevailing in other states, he added.

The Transport department offers some 57 different services to people. Of these, most services do not require the physical presence of the applicant. The government has decided to provide such services online.
