Justice Karnan completes 30 days in hiding
Chennai: With just four days to retire, Justice Karnan of Calcutta high court, against whom the Supreme Court had ordered six months jail term for a contempt case, had completed 30 days in hiding since he disappeared on May 10, a day after the SC order, from a state government guesthouse in Chennai.
Police from West Bengal and Tamil Nadu had been ‘searching’ for, the VIP fugitive ever since. He is set to retire on June 12 and sources noted that the police are waiting for him to retire so that they can avoid the situation of arresting a sitting judge of a high court.
Karnan once again failed to get relief from the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The apex court refused to hear his plea seeking a stay on its May 9 order, which sentenced him to six months jail term and asked the West Bengal police to immediately execute it. While issuing the arrest warrant against him, the Supreme Court also ordered the media to refrain from reporting Justice Karnan’s statements.
Since May 10, the WB police team headed by an officer of the rank of DGP had been camping in Chennai.
