Chennai witnesses wettest June in five years

However, Wednesday evening's heavy downpour in the city may not continue on Thursday, as the upper air circulation is no more present in the city.

Chennai: At 5.3cm rain, Chennai on Tuesday became the wettest June month in the past five years after the 2011 record, where the city saw over 7.5cm.

According to S. Balachandran, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, the state will see scattered rains on Thursdayalthough thunderstorm activity is predicted for Chennai and other northern districts. Though hailstorm is not unusual to the city, weatherman said that it is unusual in June.

Talking to DC, weather blogger, Pradeep John, attributed the scenario to the encountering of thunderstorm moving from the land with the sea tbreeze in the city.

“Many instances of hailstorms were recorded in the month of September. Though we experienced a hailstorm on June 28 and 29 of 2011, the major one was recorded at 7.5cm was noted in June 2011,” said John.
