Kochi: Two girls commit suicide on failing exam

Alappuzha/Kochi: Two girl students of Plus-Two committed suicide, one at Arthunkal and the other at north Paravur, over their failure in the examinations on Wednesday.

Sandhra, 17, student of Kanichukulangara HSS, who failed in a few subjects, was missing after she jumped into the sea at noon. She is the daughter of Udayakumar, Kalathiveliyil house, Mayithara, Kanjikuzhi, Cherthala.

The girl along with a friend reached the breakwater, about 600 metres from the coast at Aayiramthai, Arthunkal, and plunged into the sea. Her friend tried to stop the girl, but failed. The search for her continued till late in the evening. “She took the extreme step due to the mental trauma caused by her failure in the examination,” the police said.

The other girl, M.B. Athulya, 17, student of Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, north Paravur, ended her life by jumping into the river in north Paravur. She is the daughter of Baburaj, Manissery, Cheriyappalamthuruth.

According to the police, the incident happened around 1 p.m., when the girl jumped into the river from near Kuttichira bridge. On an alert, the Fire and Rescue officials reached the spot and searched for her along with local residents. The body was recovered in the evening.

Police said that Athulya had left the house in the morning to know her result. She talked with her friends and returned. However, she jumped into the river after leaving her bag, a police officer said.

The police registered a case of unnatural death and launched a probe. According to officials, the body will be handed over to her relatives after post-mortem.
