Kakinada: YSRC demands arrest of Pithapuram MLA Varma
Kakinada: YSR Congress leaders demanded that the police should arrest Pithapuram MLA S.V.S. N. Varma and lift the cases against two fishermen who were arrested by U. Kothapalli Police along with YSRC workers on Tuesday on charges of attacking Mr Varma on polling day on April 11.
The former MLAs Pendem Dorababu (Pithapuram YSRC candidate), Dwarampudi Chandrasekhara Reddy (YSRC Kakinada Assembly candidate) and former minister Koppana Mohan Rao met the Superintendent of Police Vishal Gunni on Wednesday and condemned the arrests of the fishermen.
Mr Dorababu said that on polling day, Mr Varma provoked people at the booth and the Election Commission also suggested that the police book a case against the MLA.
However, he said, that the police took no action against Mr Varma and instead arrested the innocent fishermen.
He alleged that the U. Kothapalli police were influenced by Mr Varma and were harassing innocent people. He demanded that the SP give orders for the arrest of other TD leaders and cadre who were involved in disputes on polling day.
Meanwhile, the YSRC senior leader Y.V. Subba Reddy strongly condemned the arrests of the fishermen and the lathicharge on the agitators including women. He phoned Mr Vishal Gunni on Wednesday and questioned him about the lathicharge on women agitators. He demanded that the SP take action against the police officials who were responsible for the incident.
