Acharapakkam police seize truck with 39 cattle on Chennai-Tiruchy highway
Chennai: Acharapakkam police had a run in with people allegedly transporting cattle illegally to Kerala. Police seized the truck on Chennai-Trichy national highway and rescued 39 cattle during the search operation in the early hours of Wednesday. They seized the truck along with three persons. Police said that the three - driver Paul, Pandian( 50) and Ramaswamy( 47) all hailing from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu were heading towards Kerala to deliver the consignment when they were intercepted.
According to police, at around 3 am on Wednesday, Acharapakkam police were on a routine vehicle check in Kadamalaiputhur on the Chennai- Trichy national highway when they stopped a container truck on suspicion. When the driver refused to stop the vehicle, a team of police intercepted the truck after a hot chase on the national highway. The driver and two other men on the truck tried to flee but were nabbed and the truck was searched. Police found 39 cattle heads including two cows tied inside the truck.
Police rescued the cattle in the truck and booked a case under the Prevention of cruelty to animals Act against the three accused. Police said that the accused along with the truck have been taken into custody.
Primary investigations revealed that the cattle were being transported from Andhra Pradesh to a slaughterhouse in Kerala. Further investigation is underway. A police source said that the cattle were handed over to an animal welfare organization in city.
