Bengaluru: The city is increasingly becoming unsafe for its citizens with the crime graph showing a steady increase over the past couple of years. The northern, southern, western and south eastern parts of the city account for most cases.
In the year 2017, out of 11,787 crimes reported in the city, 7,477 happened in the four areas mentioned above. The south eastern part of the city tops the list with 1,976 cases followed by west (1,772), south (1,570) and north (1,416).
In 2018 till March 31, a total of 2,267 cases have been registered in the city, out of which 1,540 have been reported from these four areas.
In 2017, 10,800 thefts were reported in the city which includes house theft, theft by servants, motor vehicle theft, cattle theft and others. It was marginally higher than 2016 (10,551).
Last year the south eastern part of the city topped the list with 1,976 cases followed by west (1,772), south (1,570) and north (1,416).
In the first three months of 2018, 195 robbery cases have been registered in the city. The northern part topped the list with 50 cases, followed by west (41) and south (34). In 2017, 633 robbery cases were reported, with an average of around 53 cases a month.
Chain snatchings on the rise
As for chain snatching the number of cases reported in the city has increased from 255 in 2016 to 354 in 2107. Last year the southern part of the city topped the list with 96 cases, followed by west (90) and north (82). In 2018 till March 31, a total of 64 cases have been registered in the city out of which 42 were booked from these three parts of the city.
City police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar said that areas like west and south eastern part of the city connects to the outskirts and the culprits use this as escape routes.
"The culprits particularly choose areas like west and south east part of the city which makes it easy for them to escape right after committing the crime. They often rent rooms on the city outskirts and don't enter the centre of the city as it would be difficult for them escape. Hence they commit thefts and robberies in areas which have several roads leading to the outskirts and rural areas which makes it easy from them to escape," he said.
The Commissioner also pointed out that most of these places are deserted with low police deployement. "We have identified such places and are concentrating on these areas to prevent such incident in future," he added.
