Telugu Desam fails to provide drinking water

People in Guntur want Sujala Sravanthi water plants to quench their thirst.

GUNTUR: The prestigious scheme of Telugu Desam government NTR Sujala Sravanthi, which was started two years ago to quench the thirst of the public totally failed.

The people in majority of the areas in Guntur district are facing severe water scarcity in this summer and they hoped of getting at least drinking water through NTR Sujala Sravanthi which was started to supply 20 liters of water for Rs 2, but the water plants remained a non-starter.

The government planned to start 300 mineral water plants in Guntur district but only 39 were started. The public are demanding starting of NTR Sujala Sravanthi water plants which would supply at least drinking water against payment.

The state government started the NTR Sujala scheme on October 2, 2014 targeting to start 300 drinking water plants by March 31, 2015. But the scheme totally failed as only 39 drinking water plants were started till now in thedistrict.
The government planned to operate these water plants with the help of businessmen, traders, industrialists, philanthropists and NGOs.

The government offered power subsidy for five years and returning of VAT amount for the purchase of water plant equipment in AP for NTR Sujala Sravanthi. Despites these offers, the scheme totally failed to be implemented.
Guntur, Mangalagiri, Vinukonda, Narasaraopeta, Chilakaluripeta, Macharla and other areas in Guntur district are facing severe water scarcity for the past two months. The people of Guntur city are getting meagre water supply, that too once in two or three days and it is forcing the public to purchase mineral water by paying huge amount.

The people in RTC Colony, Sk. Nagul Meera and others lamented over the scarcity of drinking water and said that NTR Sujala Sravanthi water plants would be most useful to quench thirst of the public in this scorching summer but the government did not try to establish those water plants.

They alleged that during 2014 elections, the Telugu Desam announced sale of 20 liters of mineral water for Rs 2 in the TD election manifesto. Hence, the public believed in the promises voted for the TD, but the government failed to fulfill the promise after coming to power.

They lamented that they were forced to pay Rs 25-30 per bubble of 20 liters to purchase drinking water from private mineral water plants. They lamented that there is only one NTR water plant in Sanjeevaiah Nagar in the 10th line which is unreachable to the public and demanded establishing of NTR water plants in all important centres in Guntur city.
