Liquor worth Rs 55 lakh seized in district

Nellore/Ongole: With only three days left for elections, all political parties have been speeding up the distribution of liquor and cash to woo the voters in a big way going by the seizure of liquor and cash from Nellore and Prakasam districts on Monday.

In Nellore district, police seized 5,511 bottles of liquor and Rs 55 lakh cash during checks at Buchireddypa-lem, Nellore Rural, and Krishnapatnam police circle limits on Monday. Police also seized 15 motorcycles and two auto rickshaw for transporting the unaccounted cash and liquor.

Meanwhile police held one Udayakumar of YSRC for distributing cash to voters at Kapadipalem area in Nellore City segment and seized Rs 2.5 lakh from him.

In another incident, election flying squad seized Rs 10 lakh from the principal's room in Narayana School at Fathekhanpeta in Nellore after the staff failed to produce any account for the cash on Monday.

In Prakasam district, a flying squad team led by Ms Basava Rani seized 2,367 bottles of liquor worth Rs 2.55 lakh from a tobacco barn belonging to a YSRC leader at Jayavaram in Tangutur mandal of Prakasam district on Monday. The stock was brought from Kaveri wines in K. Bitragunta of Jarugumalli mandal, squad members said.

District election officer and collector P.S. Pradyumna said that till date Rs 2,67,62,570 worth liquor has been seized by excise officials following intensified checking, carried as part of the election code imposed across the district.

Addressing the media persons at Chittoor on Monday, Mr Pradyumna said that MCMC has sent reports to the concerned returning officers about the identified 126 cases against the media representatives for publishing/telecasting paid news in their respective channels/newspapers. He also said that a total 416 code violation cases have come to the notice of EC through C-vigil app out of which 196 has been dropped and necessary actions taken on remaining 220 cases.

The DEO further said that all the arrangements for the ensuing general elections are going at a fast pace and are nearing completion. The DEO has given instructions to the concerned officers to arrange autos at the polling stations for the sake of blind people and, PHC and aged people, who cannot walk to the booths, in order to enable them to cast their vote.

He instructed the concerned to keep alternatives ready if any malfunction persist to the working EVMs.
