Hyderabad: Cash-strapped SCB can't buy drain cleaners

The SCB is now dependent on private services to do the job whenever such complaints are raised.

Hyderabad: The lack of sufficient funds has made it difficult for the Secunderabad Cantonment Board to procure enough suction and jetting machines to clean choked underground drainages in various colonies, bastis and main roads in 8 wards. With the only machine they have being under repair, the SCB is now dependent on private services to do the job whenever such complaints are raised.

SCB officials have stated that they try to resolve drainage choking complaints manually, mostly in colonies and bastis, with sanitation staff using certain equipment to clear the blockages in pipelines.

The jetting machines are brought in when manual labour is unable to solve the problem, especially on main roads where drainage overflow can lead to severe inconvenience to motorists. These machines clear the blockages very quickly.

The jetting cum suction unit is mounted on the lorry and is capable of airlifting dense waste, sludge like mud, slurry, stones, debris, grit, etc. from sewer lines. This is a combination machine which brings together a high-pressure sewer jetting operation and a suction operation with blow-back system.

A Ward-6 member, Mr Pandu Yadav, stated that he wants the SCB top brass to procure at least two mini machines that can easily enter narrow lanes, especially in slums, whenever choking complaints are raised. He said that suction and jetting machine services are required in his ward at least thrice every week.
