Six morning walkers hit by van in Kukatpally, 1 dead
Hyderabad: A sleepy driver and civic negligence led to the death of a woman who was out on morning walk and left five of her friends injured.
Jyothi and her neighbours Ramadevi, Lakshmi Jyothi, Pushpalatha, Usha and Kishore Reddy were walking from IDL Tank towards Kukatpally when the accident occurred at 5.35 am. The five were rushed to hospital.
The injured persons said though they were walking on the extreme left where there was no footpath. Mr Kishore Reddy said he regained consciousness in hospital.
In July 2016, municipal minister K.T. Rama Rao inspected the KPHB main road at Ushamullapudi, Panjagutta and other places and expressed anger at the pathetic condition of roads and absence of footpaths. He had asked the zonal commissioner to contact specialists for footpaths, junction improvement and landscaping, but nothing was done.
Kukatpally SI Majid Ali said: “The driver was not drunk but it seems he was on night shift last month without rest. He could have lost control due to lack of sleep.” Police has detained Hussain and booked him for accidental death, causing grievous hurt and endangering life.
Ms Ramadevi suffered fractures and has massive bleeding while Ms Usha had multiple fractures and her pelvic joint was dislocated. Ms Pushpalatha, Ms Lakshmi and Mr Kishore Reddy also suffered fractures on the lower limbs.
Doctors at Omni Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment, said the victims are under critical care observation. Dr G. Manjunath, chief hospital administrator, said: “Ramadevi is on ventilator now and Usha is also critical. The other three also underwent multiple surgeries for fractures.”
