Hyderabad: The Mahavir Jayanti on Sunday is auspicious for Jains. They celebrate the birth of the last Tirthankara Bhagwan, the Lord Mahaveer. There are 24 Jain Tirthankaras and Lord Mahaveer is the last in the line.

The procession to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti will begin at 8am from Begum Bazaar Jain Temple and end at Aghapura Jain temple by 11am. The participants will pray there for a while.

Programme organiser Mr. Lokender Jain said, “Jain Acharya Shri 108 Pushpadant Sagar Ji Maharaj has walked 1,500km barefoot from Indore to spread the messages of Jainism, love, peace and prosperity, to the people of Hyderabad. His disciple Muni Shri 108 Pramukh Sagar Ji Maharaj is in Hyderabad for the last eight months. He also travelled to neighbouring districts such as Warangal, Dornakal, Garla, Khammam and Vijaywada to spread Jainism. He was welcomed whole-heartedly not only by Jain followers but by people from other sects and religions too.”

“On the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanti, Jain followers visit temples and offer ceremonial bath known as ‘abhishek’ to Mahavir idol,” said Lokender.

The temples are lavishly decorated with flags to mark the birth anniversary. Majestic chariot processions are also carried out across the city with the images followed by thousands of devotees chanting prayers Lokender added.
