Women a deciding factor in Andhra Pradesh polls

Activists demand parties to allocate 50 per cent seats to women.

Vijayawada: Barring two districts namely Anantapur and Srikakulam, women voters are the deciding factor in the fate of politicos in the elections in 11 out of the total 13 districts in AP State. The total number of voters in 13 districts of AP is 3,69,33,091 of which male voters are 1,83,24,588 but women voters are higher with 1,86,04,742 voters and the rest 3,761 voters belong to the third gender.

The mainstream political parties are attracting the women voters towards their parties to win the elections. According to the final electoral roll published by Election Commission, there were 20,64,330 voters in Srikakulam district of which 10,35,623 were men, 10,28,460 were women and the rest of 247 were the third gender. Similarly, in Anantapur district men voters are higher than women with 15,399,36 voters against women voters of 15,187,69 and 204 were the third gender.

The highest number of voters of 40,13,770 were in East Godavari district of which women were dominating with 20,18,747 against 19,94,639 men voters and 384 were the third gender. The second highest number of voters 37,46,072 were in Guntur district of which 19,07,471 were women voters, 18,38,179 were male voters and 422 were of the third gender.

In Krishna district, the total number of voters were 33,03,592 of which 16,69,703 were women, 16,33,595 men and 294 were the third gender. 32,80,028 are the total voters in Visakhapatnam district of which 16,48,709 were women, 16,31,161 were men and 158 were of the third gender. In West Godavari, 15,08,403 were male voters,15,49,155 were female voters and 364 were of the third gender out of the total 30,57,922 voters.

In Kurnool district 14,39,183 were men, 14,51,258 women and 443 of the third gender out of a total of 28,90,884 voters. In Prakasam district, 12,43,411 were men, 12,51,823 were women, 149 third gender and 24,95,383 were the total voters.

In Nellore, women voters were 11,23,624 against 10,82,690 men and 338 third gender out of a total of 22,06,652 voters. In Kadapa district, 10,15,964 were male, 10,40,400 were female and 296 third gender out of a total of 20,56,660 voters. In Vizianagaram, 8,58,327 were men, 8,75,222 were women and 118 third gender out of a total of 17,33,667 voters.

Women organisation leaders D. Rama Devi and others said that although women voters were higher than men in AP State, “there is no use as all the powers are controlled by men.” They demanded that all political parties should give half of the seats to women for their empowerment.
