SHG women make waste segregation easy for GHMC

2,200 women appointed as Swachh dhootas.

Hyderabad: The reluctance of urban households to segregate waste has created employment for scores of women from self help groups in Hyderabad in the past few years. These women earlier used to work in factories and bidi-making units, earning meagre salaries.

Most of them are uneducated but have been trained to educate households about segregating their waste. They visit homes to spread awareness about garbage segregation and earn some money for doing so.

Vimla, who lives in an urban slum in Chandanagar is a member of a self help group, earns '8,500 a month as salary. “My job is to accompany the GHMC auto tipper and visit houses to educate residents on waste segregation. I have to ensure that the wet and dry waste is separated at the household level and then dumped in the auto tipper. I was trained to identify different types of household garbage. This has helped me earn a living.”
