Ponnar: Half of PM's JDY beneficiaries are women

Asserting the financial assistance being distributed to the women SHGs has increased to about Rs 42,500 crore in 2016-17

CHENNAI: More than half of the total beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) are women as the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen on financially empowering women, Union Minister of State for Finance and Shipping Pon Radhakrishanan has said.

Asserting the financial assistance being distributed to the women SHGs has increased to about Rs 42,500 crore in 2016-17, the Minister said it was for this reason that the financial allocation for the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) has been enhanced to Rs 5,750 crore for 2018-19 Union Budget. This, he contended, is a proactive move to empower women.

Mr Radhakrishnan who resorted to Twitter to express his views on International Women’s Day on Thursday, said in another tweet: “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 which was amended recently has included acid attack as a kind of disability which is an incredible move by the Modi Government to ensure sustained benefits to the acid attack victims#NariShakti4NewIndia.” To ease life of single women, passport rules have been amended in favour of single mothers.
