No trifurcation, KSRTC tells government

The state-appointed Sushil Khanna commission's key recommendation was to divide the loss-making unit into three zones.

Kochi: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has informed the state government of its “inability” trifurcate it anytime soon citing an acute shortage of qualified officers. The state-appointed Sushil Khanna commission's key recommendation was to divide the loss-making unit into three zones. In a letter to the transport principal secretary, KSRTC managing director A. Hemachandran pointed out that creation of zones will require qualified officers as general managers.

“The corporation can’t even redeploy the current four executive director rank officers as except for P. M. Sharaf Muhammed, the others didn’t have experience in the service operation field,” the letter says. It further said the corporation could not implement “changes” as suggested by the interim report of the expert panel at present when it is struggling even to find funds for daily operations.

“The corporation is finding it difficult to conduct the daily services without cancellations. There is a possibility of the situation getting worse if the panel recommendations are taken up for implementation now,” the letter read. Instead, the KSRTC management has entrusted deputy general manager (finance and administration), G. Anil Kumar, to prepare a draft report on how to implement the recommendations. “Further action in this regard will be taken upon submission of the report and subject to the government approval for the same,” the letter said.
