16 lakh students to write CBSE exams
Chennai: Over 16 lakh students from across the country will sit for the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) class 10 and class 12 board exams beginning Thursday.
In all, 8,86,506 students will write the class 10 board exams March 9 to April 10. This year, more than 15 per cent students (1.2 lakh) opted for the board exams as compared to last year.
This year 10,98,891 students have registered for class 12 exams — a 2.82 per cent increase from 2016. As the board decided to revert back to compulsory board exams for class 10 from next academic year, 7.81 lakh students will appear for the school based exams for one last time this year. The school-based exams will start from March 15.
From Chennai region, 1.78 lakh candidates are appearing for class 10 exams and 59,014 students appearing for class 12 exams.
For class 12 centres 56 exam centres have been set up in gulf countries and six centres in other foreign countries and for class 10 totally 70 overseas centres have been set up. More than 38,000 students will write the exams from these centres.
“CBSE has put a 3 tier arrangement for surprise checking - flying squads, flying squads from the directorate of education and special observers from outside.
The board will also appoint the full-time observers for the sensitive centres,” board officials said.
The sealed question paper packs will be opened in the presence of at least four assistant superintendents. The board also introduced the exam locator app to quickly know the location of the exam centre.
