VS Achuthanandan for protest against backwater reclamation
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan on Tuesday called for state wide mass protests against the government’s controversial order to reclaim 430 acres of kayal backwaters and paddy fields for commercial purpose.
The opposition leader slammed chief minister Oommen Chandy for his statement that the LDF government had given sanction for reclaiming the kayal backwaters during its tenure.
“It is a shameless statement made by the chief minister. The LDF government had not issued any order,” he said and added that the government’s decision smacked of corruption. He said the government had clandestinely issued the order to help big business.
The opposition leader said the UDF government had thrown all rules and regulations to winds and it was UDF’s shameless act. Achuthanandan said the UDF would get a befitting reply from the people for its clandestine operations. He urged people to come forward to protect lakes, backwaters and fight against attempts to endanger environment.
