Hyderabad: The Telangana state and Maharashtra governments signed a “historic” accord in Mumbai on Tuesday to utilise Godavari water that otherwise goes waste into the Bay of Bengal by constructing barrages on the river for drinking, irrigation and other purposes.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis signed memoranda of understanding in Mumbai for the construction of five barrages besides setting up the first inter-state board to oversee these projects and related issues.

The MoUs put an end to four decades of differences between the two states. Mr Rao requested Mr Fadnavis to allow TS take up construction of pending projects including the Mudigadda barrage.

- Kaleshwaram project (Mudigadda Barrage)
- Rajupet Barrage
- Chanaka-Korata Barrage
- Pamparad Barrage on Penganga and
- Lower Penganga project
