Kochi: Court questions parole demand

The court also asked him if it's sufficient to employ a helper in the hospital instead of gaining parole.

kochi: Kerala High Court on Friday disapproved the demand for parole by CPM leader P.K. Kunjananthan imprisoned for killing RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan.

The lifer justified his frequent paroles for treating what he claimed as ‘grave illnesses’ like joint pain, diabetes and high blood pressure.

The court dismissed them as common ailments and wondered what's the ‘need for such a course of action.’

It asked whether he would be satisfied with the continuation of treatment at the Medical College Hospital.

The court also asked him if it's sufficient to employ a helper in the hospital instead of gaining parole.

When his counsel argued prisoners do not get proper treatment at medical colleges, the court asked if it's true that they provided the best medical care.

It blasted him stating that he should not ‘parade his political convictions’ in the court and that he had justified a prisoner attending political meetings while on parole.

The counsel for the petitioner, K.K. Rema, the widow of the slain leader, argued that he was seeking parole for political activities, not treatment.

The court posted the case for further hearing next week.
