Karnataka: Here comes the sun, says energy dept

They are laying special emphasis on the production of rooftop solar energy.

BENGALURU: Renewable energy is the buzzword this year with the state planning to tap natural resources to enhance power generation with emphasis on sustainable sources.

Noting that Karnataka boasts the highest production of solar energy in the country, the CM has said that the government will take steps to produce 2,100 MW of solar energy by the end of next year. They are laying special emphasis on the production of rooftop solar energy.

This solar energy will also help ease the difficulties being faced by farmers, with the provision of power supply for pump sets during the day.
To improve the quality of power being supplied to farmers, 40,000 new transformers will also be installed.

Raghunandan, a retired engineer from KPTCL, said it is good news that the government is thinking progressively about tapping natural resources to generate power. “They should explore more options in tapping solar energy by learning from European countries, who are far ahead. We will want the solar power, as we do not know what is in store, keeping in mind the shortage in coal. If we make use of the solar power, then we will have no load shedding. The private companies and residential layouts and buildings should also be encouraged to tape solar energy for daily usage,” he said.
