College practical exams overlook many norms
KAKINADA: Many faculty members of Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University Kakinada (JNTUK) allege that practicals examination system is not being taken seriously at the university which overlooks norms pertaining to conduct of such exams.
According to them, many irregularities keep taking place during lab examinations in several departments in JNTUK and its affiliated colleges. With many of the labs having lab technicians and staff who have been there for a long time, they have a dominating attitude and aggressive behaviour not only towards the students bt also for many faculty members.
At the University Colleges of Engineering, there were no external examiners. Because of this, students are in the grip of faculty members and lab staff. In some labs, there care allegedly even class IV personnel who dominate the faculty members and the students.
As per the universities examination regulations, internal and external lab examinations need to be held and it is mandatory to appoint an external examiner to conduct the examinations and hold viva testing. However, not only the university colleges but also affiliated colleges, particularly autonomous colleges are flouting the norms with the lab examinations being conducted by the same lab instructor or the faculty member concerned.
"The lab technicians should be transferred to other colleges of the University as also lab personnel once every six months. During the examination, only the external examiner should manage the exams while faculty members concerned should assist them," said a faculty member of the university.
According to him, the Babulu incident occurred at the university due to not following this rule or system. It has come as a blow to the organisation. He suggested holding the lab examinations and Viva tests as also the lab classes be conducted under surveillance of CC cameras. The university officials would know whether the labs are being properly running or not. The university, too, can give quality education to students, he said.
Meanwhile, in affiliated colleges to JNTUK, there is a jumbling system being implemented. But, in many instances, local college faculty or lab instructors are conducting the tests while external examiners come in the evening to only put their signatures.
However, the University Registrar V.V.Subba Rao said that the lab and viva system would be streamlined and CC cameras should be installed in every lab in all colleges including the university and affiliated colleges. He said that already instructions have been issued to the officials concerned.
