Internet service providers must not air Viswasam: Madras high court

Justice S.S.Sundar granted the interim injunction on a suit filed by Sathya Jyothi Films, producer of the film “Viswasam”.

Chennai: The Madras high court has restrained 38 internet service providers from uploading and airing Tamil film “Viswasam”, starring popular film star Ajith and Nayanthara, scheduled to be released on January 10.

Justice S.S.Sundar granted the interim injunction on a suit filed by Sathya Jyothi Films, producer of the film “Viswasam”.

Plaintiff’s counsel Vijayan Subramanian submitted that the plaintiff has invested substantial sums of money in the production of the said film and was scheduled to be released in more than 1500 screens worldwide including Chennai. The plaintiff reasonably apprehends that various internet service providers and cable operators have the potential to upload and/or enable third parties to copy and display through cable or online medium of the plaintiff’s copyright protected said film.

The plaintiff reasonably apprehends that as and when the film was released in theatres such acts of piracy would also commence and websites would again mobilize to illegally copy, record, download, reproduce, transmit and communicate the said copyright protected said work to general public. Therefore, the plaintiff has filed the present suit, Vijayan Subramanian added.
