Bharat bandh: Anganwadi worker dies in Mundgod
Hubballi/ Mysuru: The Bharat bandh called by trade unions nationwide on Tuesday received a mixed response in North Karnataka, although it had a greater impact in Hyderabad Karnataka.
While the day passed off peacefully, a 57 -year- old anganwadi assistant died while participating in a protest in Mundgod town , Uttar Kannada district. The woman, Shanta Chakrasali, fainted and was declared brought dead when rushed to the taluk hospital, according to the police.
There was no other untoward incident elsewhere although passengers were hugely inconvenienced by the NWKRTC suspending its services for the duration of the bandh.
The district administration had declared a holiday for all schools and colleges, but most business establishments remained open in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad and autorickshaws ran as usual despite the drivers' and owners' association's support for the bandh.
Normal life was not impacted to any great extent in Haveri, Gadag, Bagalkot and Belagavi either. The bandh was peaceful in Mysuru, Kodagu, Chamarajnagar and Mandya districts.
The old Mysuru region covering Mysuru, Kodagu, Chamarajnagar and Mandya districts saw massive protests by workers' unions from various sectors but the KSRTC buses and autos plied as usual and commercial establishments did not shut, according to Southern Range IGP, Sharath Chandra. Hotels too functioned as usual.
The response was greater in Kalaburagi, Yadagir, Bidar and Raichur in Hyderabad -Karnataka. The government had declared a holiday for school and colleges and autos and state-owned buses remained off the roads in these districts.
