Kerala cops work on strategy against IS' audios

The police and other investigation agencies are working on a counter-strategy of spreading audio clips conveying the real messages of Islam.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police and intelligence agencies are working on a strategy to spread good messages on the social media in view of the fact that it has become nearly impossible to trace the source of communally sensitive audio clips.

Over the last couple of months, about 50 audio clips with misleading interpretation of Islamic beliefs and call of jihad were spread through apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. Owing to the end-to-end transcription protocol being followed by these apps, the investigation agencies could not track their sources, though it was suspected that some youths from North Kerala who joined the IS were behind the audio clips.

Hence, the police and other investigation agencies are working on a counter-strategy of spreading audio clips conveying the real messages of Islam.

"At least five good messages against one bad message. That is the counter-strategy we are planning so that anyone looking for such messages would only get more good messages than the bad ones," said an investigation officer.

The audio clips are being created with the help of NGOs and religious outfits and they would not have the label of police or any investigation agencies.

The state police had initiated such counter- strategies on the cyber space on a few earlier occasions also. The latest one was against the propaganda of migrant workers being harassed in Kerala. State police chief Loknath Behera assured the migrants through his messages in Hindi and Bengali that Kerala is a safe place for them. When the police faced criticisms regarding the Jisha murder probe, an elaborate post giving specific clarifications to each allegation was circulated on the social media.
