Centre urged to convert East Coast Road into national highway
CHENNAI: Considering the importance of the upgradation of the East Coast Road (ECR) as a four lane national highway, the state government gave its “in principle” clearance to convert it into national highway and urged the Centre to take up this work for speedy implementation.
Addressing the Assembly on Monday Governor Banwarilal Purohit said a proposal has been mooted for four-lanning of the NH 45A of the ECR in the first phase and upgradation of the remaining stretches from Nagapattinam to Kanyakumari in the next phase.
Phase-II Chennai metro project: Also, the government urged the Centre to accord early approval for the phase II of the Chennai metro rail project involving an estimate cost of Rs 79,962 crore.
It was expected that the remaining part of the underground sections of phase I of the Chennai metro project would be operational in stages by the end of 2018. “The phase-I extension, covering a length of nine km from Washermenpet to Thiruvotiyur / Wimco Nagar, is also under implementation,” Mr Purohit said.
