Uttar Pradesh: 5 labourers Killed, 6 injured as car crashes into night shelter
Lucknow: Five laborers were killed and seven others critically injured when a car rammed into a night shelter in the wee hours of Sunday.
At least 35 laborers were sleeping in the shelter when the incident took place. The five labourers who died were all daily wage earners from Bahraich district.
According to police reports, a Hyundai i20 allegedly belonging to the son of an ex-SP MLA Ashok Rawat, was driveing at a high speed when it rammed into a temporary roadside winter shelter near the legislators' colony in Dalibagh area.
According to an eyewitness, “It was around 2 am when suddenly this car came at a high speed and rammed into the night shelter. I saw three people inside. They were all drunk. Around 10 ambulances and the police came to the spot soon after.” Both occupants of the car tried to escape after the accident but were caught by those who stay in the night shelter.
The police have arrested two of the accused and the other three are absconding. All of them were in an inebriated condition when the accident took place.
“Two of the accused, who were drunk, have been arrested and car has also been seized,” SSP, Manzil Saini said. While four labourers died on the spot, one died during treatment.
