Bengaluru: 8 workers injured in roof collapse
Bengaluru: Eight construction workers sustained injuries when the roof of an under construction building collapsed in Kundalahalli in Whitefield, early Sunday.
The injured have been identified as Badri, Pradeep, Sushanth, Hiralal, Jogesh, Manthu, Ghanashyam and Bappi. Most of the injured hailed from Uttar Pradesh and were aged between 18 and 25 years. They were living in a temporary shed near the construction site.
Among them, Badri’s condition is said to be serious, as he has sustained head injuries, while others sustained fractures and other minor injuries.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 5 am when around 45-50 workers were at the site. Many of them were working on the second floor of the building and were doing centering work.
The roof collapsed on 9-10 workers and some of them were stuck under the debris. The other workers rushed to their rescue and brought them out and shifted them to nearby hospitals.
It is alleged that there was no safety measures and proper supervision during the work. Further, the incident was brought to the notice of the police few hours after the incident, following which the police and Fire & Emergency Department staff rushed to the spot, and rescued a few others.
“Though the exact reason for the incident is yet to be investigated, substandard material used during construction is suspected to have caused the collapse. As per the preliminary probe, the building was being constructed for a MNC software company that had an agreement with the builders. We have taken up a negligence case against the contractor and supervisor,” the Whitefield police said.
Meanwhile, it is said that the construction company had not obtained sanction for the building plan from the BBMP. Further investigations are on.
