End quota for Anglo-Indians, says A Revanth Reddy
Hyderabad: Congress MP A. Revanth Reddy has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to nominate members from the third gender to Parliament and state assemblies in place of the quota provided for the Anglo-Indian community.
The member of Parliament said it was important to provide political representation to the marginalised community. India needed to become a torchbearer of social justice and send the message to the world.
As against the large number of people belonging to the third gender, there were only a few thousand Anglo-Indians, he said and added that the community is very much Indian and is generally well-to-do.
He said the third gender needed political reservation. The letter comes in the backdrop of Parliament considering the extension of reservations for Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies for another 10 years.
“It is important that at we do away with Article 334 (b) of the Constitution which allows a member of the Anglo Indian Community to be nominated in Parliament and state Assemblies.”
