Thiruvananthapuram: Now, renaissance on bank calender

It will have various events related to renaissance for each page earmarked for a month.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kadakkal Service Cooperative Bank in Kollam district will bring out a calendar with renaissance as the theme for 2019. The calendar designed by artist Shinil V. Kadakkal, which is under final stages of printing at Sivakasi, will be released on Monday.

The calendar will have various events related to renaissance for each page earmarked for a month. These include the Villuvandi yatra of Ayyankali, Misra Bojanam held under the leadership of Sahodaran Ayyappan, Kallumala agitation and the meeting between Mahtma Gandhi and Sreenarayana Guru. The poem Vazhakula by Changampuzha Krishna Pillai in which he depicted the atrocities of the landlords belonging to the upper castes against the lower caste tenants is the theme for the month of May. The page for June depicts the incident in which the school at Venganoor was burnt by upper caste goons for giving admission to a lower caste girl Panchami.

S. Vikraman, bank president, said that the decision to bring out the calendar was taken considering the present turbulent situation in the state. “We felt, that there was a need for depicting renaissance as a theme,” sad Mr Vikraman.

The cooperative bank from rural Kollam has already turned into a role model for others in the sector with its innovative 'welfare banking' initiative inspired by the 'welfare economics' of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.
