Sand mining rampant in Dakshina Kannada: Ayukta police

MANGALURU: The fight against illegal sand mining by environmentalists has received a boost with the Lokayukta Police submitting a report about the existence of illegal sand mining in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district.

The report submitted by the Lokayukta Police recently has clearly mentioned about the presence of illegal sand mining in DK district.

Going by the findings of Lokayukta Police, there are about 39 places of illegal sand mining and sand collection places in Bantwal, Belthangady and Mangaluru Taluks.

Activists are satisfied with the report as they feel that their long fight against illegal sand mining has now been agreed even by the Lokayuta Police.

National Environment Care Federation (NECF) state secretary Shashidhar Shetty had filed a complaint with the Lokayutha during the recent hearing about the existence of illegal sand mining in Dakshina Kannada district. Based on this complaint the Lokayutka Police conducted secret operation to collect information and submitted the report to the Lokayukta.
