Hyderabad: Corporators raise a stink over garbage collection
Hyderabad: Cutting across party lines, corporators have alleged at the recent council meeting that Swachh autos, meant for door-to-door garbage collection on a daily basis, are playing truant and do their job once in two weeks. They warned that the city will dip in the Swachh ranking if the GHMC did not provide infrastructure to keep the city clean. They requested the authorities to employ more sanitation teams and hire additional Swachh autos to improve sanitation.
Ayesh Rubina, Ahmednagar corporator, alleged that Swachh autos are collecting the waste in her ward once in two weeks. Lack of Swachh autos are cited as the main reason. Of the 30,000 families in the area, only 1,000 get the services of Swachh autos, she noted, and added that the residents have begun the habit of throwing waste in public places due to the erratic nature of the Swachh autos.
Corporators also noted that due to poor sanitation, residents in several areas are hit by dengue fever and other vector-borne diseases. Replying to the queries, B. Janardhan Reddy, GHMC commissioner, said that the GHMC would purchase about 500 auto tippers and increase the strength of the sanitation staff within 45 days. Several issues, including LED street lights, road repairs, banning of plastic and road widening, were discussed at the meeting.
