Bengaluru: Five deadlines later, 844 potholes remain

Three teams headed by Mayor, BBMP commissioner and special commissioner have been formed to inspect different areas in the city.

Bengaluru: While Mayor Sampath Raj says many potholes are yet to be filled, BBMP Engineer in Chief (EiC) M.R. Venkatesh claims all identified potholes have been filled. However, the reality is that there are still many pothole ridden roads in the city and for the motorists the nightmare continues.

Following Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s warning the BBMP had assured to fill all the potholes to make Bengaluru a pothole-free city. Ironically, the BBMP chose to suspend the engineers instead of getting the potholes covered before the deadline of November 6, even after postponing it multiple times.

Following the directions by the Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George on Tuesday three engineers have been suspended for dereliction of duties. The suspended engineers are Amruth Kumar Solanki, Executive Engineer, C. V. Raman Nagar, Saifuddin, Executive Engineer, Shivajinagar sub-division and Mallinath Malkapur, Assistant Engineer, Banaswadi. Following several deaths due to potholes and incessant rains, Mr George held a number of meetings and directed engineers to fill all the potholes under their jurisdiction. Engineers were directed to get contractors to fill potholes as per the tender agreement. Mayor Sampath Raj said that stern action will be initiated against engineers who failed to meet the deadline in filling potholes.

Three teams headed by Mayor, BBMP commissioner and special commissioner have been formed to inspect different areas in the city. The inspection will be carried out on Tuesday night and engineers who fail to give convincing answers for failing to fill potholes will be suspended, he said.

Most of the potholes have been attended and some are lying unattended. Unfortunately, some new ones have also cropped up. Filling pothole is an ongoing process and engineers have been directed to fill all of them, he added.
