Hyderabad: Multi-level parking is decade old

Experts said multi-level parking complexes are needed as on-street parking will not be sufficient.

Hyderabad: Multi-level parking complex has failed to take off in Hyderabad despite being planned over 10 years ago by the erstwhile MCH. Private agencies had participated in the tenders invited by the civic body but they backed off stating the project would not be economically viable due to various reasons including high land cost.

Experts said multi-level parking complexes are needed as on-street parking will not be sufficient. There are 45 lakh vehicles in the city and the numbers are rising. However, they said the project will need government support to become a success.

“Government has to give its land to private developers in addition to commercial space. It has to be a mixture of parking-cum-commercial space with 60 to 70 per cent space for parking,” said traffic and transport expert, Dr S. Nagabhushan Rao. He said officials should study the reasons for the existing multi-level parking complex at Abids not being a success.

Mr T.S. Reddy of the Central Road Research Institute said enforcement of no parking zones should be 100 per cent. “Officials can explore the possibility of running mini-shuttle services from the parking complex to commercial markets,” he said. GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said the best practices world-wide were being studied to adopt one for the city.

Parked cabs jam traffic in IT corridor
Illegal parking of cabs and other vehicles are causing huge traffic jams in IT corridor. Roads with heavy traffic — like Gachibowli junction, Cyber Tower to Mindspace junction, near Bio-Diversity junction and from Shaikpet to Raidurgam — are plagued by illegal parking.

Mr Y.K.Rao, an IT professional said that the route from Shaikpet to Raidurgam was difficult to cross during peak hours. “We can see illegal parking by autorickshaws and cabs along 300 metres on the Old Bombay Highway near My Home Rainbow Apartments. Near Anand Silicon Apartments at Shaikpet, illegal parking is narrowing the road,” he said.

Mr B. Sugunakar from Kondapur said that key junctions were being occupied by autorickshaws and the main roads from Kothaguda junction to Hitec City by cabs. Kukatpally traffic ACP P. Ashok said the department was allowing cabs to park beside roads from Cyber Towers to Raheja junction during off peak hours.

“We are taking up enforcement drives against illegal parking. We have installed ‘no parking’ boards at vulnerable places. We are sending e-challans to violators,” he said.
