Two held for snatching mobile at knifepoint

Police identified the victim as Dinesh (19), resident of Krishna Nagar in Nerkundram, doing first year studies at a private engineering college.

Chennai: The city police arrested two persons here on Sunday for threatening and robbing a student at knifepoint. Police identified the accused as Gnanaprakasam (24) of Nerkundram and Manikandan (26) of Maduravoyal.

Police identified the victim as Dinesh (19), resident of Krishna Nagar in Nerkundram, doing first year studies at a private engineering college. He was walking alone around 11 pm on Saturday in Mettukuppam area, when the accused had on a two-wheeler stopped him and threatened him at knifepoint, and robbed his mobile phone.

Based on Dinesh’s complaint, Koyambedu police registered a case and launched a search for the duo. Meanwhile, during a regular vehicle check in Virugambakkam in the small hours of Sunday, police had stopped two bike-borne men on suspicion.

As the two made contradictory statements, they were taken for questioning. During intense grilling, the two accepted that they had robbed Dinesh of his mobile phone, and were also involved in two other robberies in the recent past.

They were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Police seized two mobile phones, a two-wheeler and a knife from them.
